Desmond Hui is Professor and Founding Head of Department of Art and Design, Director of the BA-AD, BA-CCI and MA-CHM at the Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (From 1 August 2024, he will be CIPSH Chair in Cultural Heritage and Creative Humanities at HSUHK). He obtained BArch from Cornell; MPhil and PhD from Cambridge University.
Formerly he was Professor and Associate Dean of Arts at CUHK and Director of the Centre for Cultural Policy Research at HKU. He was Guest Scholar at the Canadian Center for Architecture in Montreal in 1998 and Research Fellow of St Edmund’s College, University of Cambridge 1989-90. He is a registered architect in both Hong Kong and Canada.
He was Curator for the Venice Biennale Hong Kong Pavilion in 2008 and 2012.
He is at present Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Art for the Museum Advisory Committee, member of Country and Marine Parks Board, Member of the Appeal Tribunal (Building Ordinance) and Museum Expert Advisor for the Hong Kong government.
From 2015-18, he was international expert for the UNESCO expert facility of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions and was engaged as International Expert in Mongolia. From 2017-19, he was member of the Expert Group for the UNESCO Culture/2030 Indicators project now implemented as pilot in several countries and cities and he has been appointed as Regional Expert for the Philippines and Baguio City from 2021-22.
