Accomodation

Participants will be accommodated in one of the most prestigious university residences in Madrid, the Residencia de Estudiantes (Pinar 21-23, Madrid 28006).

The Residencia de Estudiantes, from its foundation in 1910 and until 1936, was the first cultural centre in Spain and one of the most lively and fruitful experiences of creation and scientific and artistic exchange in Europe between the wars. This made the Residencia a focal point for the dissemination of modernity in Spain, and many of the most outstanding figures of 20th century Spanish culture, such as the poet Federico García Lorca, the painter Salvador Dalí, the filmmaker Luis Buñuel and the scientist Severo Ochoa, Nobel Price, emerged from among its residents. The Residencia was also a forum for debate and dissemination of the intellectual life of interwar Europe, presented directly by its protagonists. Albert Einstein, Paul Valéry, Marie Curie, Igor Stravinsky, John M. Keynes, Alexander Calder, Walter Gropius, Henri Bergson and Le Corbusier were among the personalities who visited its rooms.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and afterwards, during the military dictatorship, until 1975, it was used as normal college for students. When de democratic constitution was recovered, it underwent deep works of material restauration and was reintegrated into its original functions.

Today it is a prestigious place of accommodation for scientists, researchers and artists. It has an important library and archive and organizes conferences, scientific meetings and cultural activities of the highest quality.
